Sustainability

Definition: What is sustainability?

Sustainability has become a widely used term in recent years. Whether in politics, economics, social sciences or environmental protection, this concept is encountered everywhere. But what does sustainability really mean and why is it so important?

The principle of sustainability – a definition

The term ‘sustainability’ is derived from the Latin word ‘sustinere,’ which means ‘to endure’ or ‘to maintain.’ Coined in the 18th century in forestry, ‘sustainability’ originally referred to the idea of not cutting down more wood than could grow back. Today, the principle is applied to numerous areas and has become a guiding principle for the 21st century.

Sustainability refers to the use of resources in a way that meets the needs of the present generation while ensuring that future generations are able to meet their own needs.

The three pillars of sustainability

Sustainability rests on three pillars: ecology, social issues and the economy. Acting sustainably means taking all three aspects into account and bringing them into harmony with one another.

1. Ecological sustainability: This involves conserving nature and its resources, preserving biodiversity and minimising negative impacts on our climate and environment.

2. Social sustainability: This concerns the promotion of social cohesion, equal opportunities and social justice. It also includes protecting and improving human health and quality of life.

3. Economic sustainability: This aspect aims to achieve healthy economic development. This includes, among other things, using resources efficiently, reducing waste and creating long-term, stable jobs.

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

In order to promote sustainability worldwide, the United Nations (UN) adopted the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015. These include combating poverty and hunger, guaranteeing good health and education for all, ensuring clean energy and strengthening sustainable cities and communities.

Conclusion

Sustainability is a complex concept that is applied in a wide variety of areas and is constantly evolving. At its core, it is about using our resources responsibly and sparingly – whether in the environment, in the economy or in our social interactions. Sustainability is not just a trend, but a necessity to ensure a livable future for us and future generations.
